My primary school years were memorable for the consistency of my abject apathy and lack of any motivation to do anything other than get in trouble resulting in the equally consistent consequence of the wrath that followed from frustrated teachers and exasperated parents.
This pattern of apparently irrational ambivalence continued to show up in my life, though curiously interspersed with occasional periods of ambition and elite performance. Periods of indulging in mind numbing minimum wage pursuits, social welfare participation, and complete blindness to any future vision of hope, would be interrupted by incongruent success in sport or random business ventures.
This pendulum swung as pendulums do back and forth between unnatural mediocrity and equally surprising successes. As the fog lifted and a sense of clarity of focus and vision emerged it occurred to me that ambition is a gift, you either have it or you don’t, but here’s the rub….ambition does not exist in a vacuum, if you have ambition then you also have within you the tools to manifest that ambition.
Frustration represents the gap between what you have and what you innately feel you are capable of attaining. Frustration represents feedback that something needs to change, and without frustration your comfort zone will consign you to a ball and chain life.
When I was competing for the lowest grade average in my class I knew something was out of kilter. When I spent a decade of my life living on the precipice of financial oblivion and destitution I was acutely aware that something in my Universe was malfunctioning, and this awareness that my results were not a reflection of who I was gave me the insight to find the answer.
6 to the power of 6 equates to over 46000. The context of this snippet is at the heart of my answer. If you are reading this scribble and you have an ache, something you can’t quite identify but hints at ambition unfulfilled then my friend you may well be traveling down the same path I traversed for many years, and I have a message, keep the faith there is a reason for your unease.
Let’s wrap up. Wisdom is overrated and represents someone’s worldview. Wisdom is only useful to those who crave a validation for their own thoughts. My message has value only to those with an insatiable craving to be, do and have more than they’ve ever achieved. You cannot teach ambition, it may be dormant but it craves attention.
Your success, failure, fitness, wealth, sense of well-being and happiness is largely contingent on the 6 people you allow to dominate your life. Until we accept that it is our responsibility to choose who these people are, then we are taking a massive chance that our incidental peer group will serve us well.
As my life swung from mediocre to significant there was a very obvious and visible thread. My primary school peers were as uninspired as our teachers allowed and we performed accordingly. My sporting peers during my period of international sporting success were elite, driven and obsessed with winning. My journey from penniless to the world I now inhabit corresponded with my Key 6 peers changing and evolving.
Surround yourself with the 6 people who are most aligned to your vision, who most inspire you and motivate you. If they are not in your current circle, seek them out, stalk them, infiltrate their network, and engage with them.
Energy attracts energy and this power of 6 when multiplied will utterly change your life
