As kids exercise was for most of us a natural outlet, enjoyable and certainly not a punishment for stacking on a few kilos. Then we forgot how to move, became rigid, tight and achy.
If you've forgotten how to summon those exercise endorphins, take a few first steps. If you're getting headaches there's a reason. Lack of water, or pent up stress. Take a walk instead.
15 minutes then 30 and then maybe 50. Once you've locked in the habit, the body and mind will respond. For 2 million years we've walked. It's the most natural movement our species has evolved to do. Not deadlifting, or bench pressing or sprinting. Walking.
After a few weeks your mind and body will CRAVE it and it will no longer be an effort. Your brain hormones will kick in, BDNF (google it) is more powerful than any stimulant.
Stress. See above. Some stress is adaptable. The stress of using muscles we've hardly used causes temporary pain until we adapt (a days work climbing ladders and cleaning out the gutters!). The other stress is the killer. When every waking moment is lived in a flight or fight state we invite disease. Toxic relationships, environmental toxins and irrational beliefs (like we're in some way not worthy) take their toll. Learning to unwind without chemical assistance is crucial.
Nutrition. If you've been following this page for awhile you'll be aware of a theme. Nutrition matters. Reduce sugar and carbohydrates, increase fats and salt. WTF...Salt!! Almost all the evidence recently emerging is that the guidelines for salt are way too low. Salt was a food preservative for thousands of years, our food was laced with salt and hypertension was unknown.. Salt is not addictive, we crave it when it's too low and are satiated when we have enough.
Like cholesterol, whilst there is an amount that's too much, many more people are likely to have problems from levels that are too low than too high.
Habits define our world. New habits take a little effort until they become natural. Most habits are default, but the healthy ones need a little cultivating. :)
